American Idol Recap: Tuesday, February 26: 70's Night, But Which …
OK, let’s get one thing cleared up before we start the recap of the show…
YES, Joanne did bungle and let the pre-taping cat out of the bag last week. She said “Sunday” (the day she and the ladies actually taped their performances), then quickly attempted to cover it with “I mean, Wednesday” (referring to the day the show was broadcast.)
YES, as confirmed by my behind-the-scenes AI contact, the performance shows at this point in the competition ARE pre-taped. Currently, the boys are singing for their supper on Saturday, the girls on Sunday. Do I think some transparency of this fact would have been appreciated by the general populus before Joanne’s tongue trippage?
Of course. But then, I’m a big fan of the truthiness.
I suppose it shouldn’t be surprising, given the current number of contestants and the extreme amount of work to be done between shows: Picking songs, rehearsals, Vommercials, hair, make-up, photo shoots, interview packages, schooling for the young ‘uns, you name it. Oh yeah, they try to sleep a little too.
Does it take a little of the excitement away from Tuesday and Wednesday nights right now? I think so. And according to all the emails I have received from AI fans asking if the pre-taping rumor is true, they do too.

Do we have enough impressionable and scared 18-25 year olds left?

Right, most people don’t know about it. However, most people don’t sit in front of their computers pressing F5 on reddit.com every few minutes.I would say the average redditor is more well informed than your average person.

Floating a mere .5% is hardly what I would call “depegged”.

Damn it! I guess I’m stuck with Jesus then. Unless anyone else has got some ideas.

How do you know it’s not an isolated incident? They don’t win all the contracts.

Maybe, on some grand scale, but it’s good for the middle class. The last 100 years we’ve seen a “strong” economy in the US and the result has been the funneling of most of the nations wealth to a very small group of people.I’ll take a “weak” economy with strong manufacturing and a healthy middle class over a “strong” one with an ever increasing wealth gap and a struggling middle class any day.

The US has been suffering from the undervalued Yuan. So the Yuan getting stronger is good news. Can’t vote this up because of asinine, alarmistic headline.

And then China will end up in the same boat we’re in now. There seems to be this idea that “first world nations” can outsource their manufacturing to poorer places and have strong economies in the long term. The fact of the matter is that if you don’t make anything then you only have things which are of perceived value, not real worth. For me the ideal is an independant US where we manufacture a lot of our own goods, produce our own energy, produce and consume our own food supply, and export our intellectual property to other nations for profit.Would this make the US the biggest economy in the global market? Probably not. Would it be good for the average American citizen? Probably. Guess which one I give a crap about.

It’ll be hard for the dollar to go back up very much if it loses its status as reserve currency.
March 17th, 2008 at 12:59 am
That’s not to say that it is allowed to trade freely at what the world market would set it at. It’s still held down (undervalued) by the Chinese leaders who do so to keep them a cheap exporter, but it isn’t pegged to the dollar officially. For some reason, a lot of people seem to think that it is.

Wow, I was kidding.

The yuan was unpegged in mid 2005, that would make it almost 3 years, and even so it’s still loosely tied to the dollar along with a basket of other currencies. Also it’s only allowed to float so much per day, I think .3% so it’s not like it can just shoot up and be worth more than the dollar in a day.
