Pokemon club aims to 'catch 'em all'

BY MATT ALMEIDA News Journalist J.R. Simplot, ranked 89th on Forbes’ 100 wealthiest people in the world list last year, died Sunday morning in his Boise home. The coroner’s report stated he died of natural causes.Simplot left behind his wife, Esther, two sons, a daughter and 18 grandchildren.
Although Mario Townes, president of the Boise State Pokemon League Gym, admits to owning more than 4,000 Pokemon cards, he said he hasn’t caught ‘em all.
Every Friday, Townes and 15 other Pokemon players meet in the Student Union Building for league battles with their collections of cards.
Players have a deck of 60 cards, but they can include any card they own into their deck. This makes the game different every time.
Townes says this is what makes the game fun and exciting.
“We have 9-year-olds who come and play, and some parents who come to play,” Townes said. “All ages are welcome.”
Senior Wenyi Dai became interested in Pokemon after a new game was made for Nintendo DS in April 2006.
“We spent over $1,000 on cards last year,” Dai said. Dai is a mathematics major and is trying to formulate a mathematical strategy for the game. She has tried for about a year, but the solution remains elusive.
One of the largest Pokemon tournaments, organized by the Nampa League, “Battle Roads,” will take place May 30 at BSU. It is one of two sponsored Pokemon tournaments each year.
At most tournaments there are prizes such as pins and badges. Packs of cards are given at larger tournaments.
Each player can also become regionally, nationally and internationally ranked. Townes is ranked sixth in Idaho.
There are different ranks, or levels of players. A Pokemon Professor is a particularly high-ranking player.
To gain this ranking, the player is required to take a challenging online test of the game and its characters. Once a player gains the title they are given a white lab coat to wear at tournaments.
