A ‘Golden’ Moment … On Wednesday, April 30, State Senator Marty Golden, a member of the Senate Committee on Education, hosted the sixth annual “If I Were A State Senator For A Day” contest for sixth-, seventh-, and eighth-graders in his district. I had the honor of being a judge on a panel of four during the contest at the Knights of Columbus on 13th Avenue and, let me tell you, it was one of the toughest decisions I’ve had to make in a long while. These kids were brilliant and quite inspiring. Congratulations to winners Marie Frolich, OLG; Justin Lang, I.S. 238; and Amy Elsayed, McKinley Jr. High. See more on this story on page 5.
And Another Golden Moment … Congratulations to Brendan Michael Grady and Kelly Anne Dolan, who were engaged on May 3 after dinner at Chadwick’s. The big man had the ring brought out on a dessert plate with ‘Will you marry me?’ written in chocolate sauce. Happily, Kelly said ‘yes.’ They celebrated down at Pippin’s Pub where they were joined by Brendan’s mom Rita, sister Deirdre, his brother Patrick with his wife Lindsay, Kelly’s dad and her sister Patricia. Hosts Stephen Oliver and Anthony Bartholomeo bought drinks along with friends, John Chell, Patty O’Donnell and numerous others. Nicely done, B-man.
Happy Belated Birthday to my favorite Poly Prep basketball back-up center/right-handed pitcher, Sam Hasty, who turned 18 on May 4. After his Poly graduation, Hasty plans to be pitching for Rutgers University, which won the Division I championship last season. For more on Hasty, see Benchside Seats on page 10.
Ladies and Gentlemen, the President of Shoreview Golf Club… Paul J. Strafaci is the newly appointed president of the Shoreview Golf Club of the Dyker Beach Golf Course. Paul graduated from Bishop Ford, and has been playing golf since age four. In fact, he led Ford to a championship in his senior year. He is currently a detective second class in the NYPD. Congratulations, pal.

Southern California’s ANTAGONIST have confirmed two upcoming SoCal shows, the first being April 12 in Anaheim at Chain Reaction alongside the band’s friends in Suicide Silence and The Faceless. Next up, the ANTAGs will hit the road to meet up with Dragonlord and Prosthetic Records labelmates LIGHT THIS CITY up in Bakersfield at The Dome for 420 Fest, which will also feature a bunch of other bands.
In other news, ANTAGONIST continues posting video updates from inside the studio where the band has been holed up with producer Fred Archambault (Avenged Sevenfold, The Confession, Deftones), recording the band’s Prosthetic Records debut, Exist.
The follow-up to 2006’s An Envy of Innocence, Exist will tentatively see a release late this summer.
Live rehearsal footage of ANTAGONIST playing clips from some of their new material, as well as prior material and live footage can be seen on the band’s YouTube channel and on the band’s official MySpace page. ANTAGONIST plans on touring heavily after the recording of Exist, and details on venues and cities will be available shortly.
ANTAGONIST live dates are as follows:
4/12 Anaheim, CA – Chain Reaction (with Suicide Silence, The Faceless)
4/20 Bakersfield, CA – The Dome (420 Fest with Dragonlord, Light This City, more)

Observing April Fools Day has become a time-honored tradition for many web companies. Much like changing your logo to celebrate holidays, pulling a fast one on your users on April 1st is something that many web services and applications have really taken to heart. But keeping creative year-after-year is tough, and some companies have learned how to consistently deliver. Below, based on past performance, is a list of the top 10 places you can go to get fooled tomorrow.
Google’s pranks each year are probably the most anticipated on the web. Last year, they hit users with two: Sewage-based home WiFi, and printed Gmail. Other classics from the Google prank archive include: the Google Mentalplex, Google Gulp, Google’s jobs on the moon, Google PigeonRank, and Google Romance.
Being the tricksters they are, Google also sometimes makes some extaordinary real announcements on April 1, like in 2004 when it used a rather tongue-in-cheek press release to announce Gmail. Google also inspires others to create Google-centric pranks, such as Google Maps Rooms from Google Blogoscoped in 2006.
Auction site eBay is another great place to trawl for April Fools jokes. Some intrepid auctioneer usually tries to pull a prank each year, perhaps most famously that distinction fell to prop-maker Dan Baines. In 2006 he caused quite a stir when he put up for sale what was purported to be the body of a dead “fairy” on the site. It took him days to respond to all the email he got as a result. “”I’ve had all sorts of comments including people who say they’ve seen exactly the same things and one person who told me to return the remains to the grave site as soon as possible or face the consequences,” he told the BBC.

The North's former first minister, David Trimble, made a similar assertion in the London Daily Telegraph last week, suggesting that Mrs. Clinton did little more than accompany former president Bill Clinton on visits. "She visited when things were happening, saw what was going on, she can certainly say it was part of her experience. I don't want to rain on the thing for her; but being a cheerleader for something is slightly different from being a principal player," he said.
Sinn Féin president Gerry Adams told The Irish Times that, although he admires all three remaining US presidential candidates and is not endorsing any of them, Mrs. Clinton is justified in claiming a role in the peace process. "David Trimble is reported as saying Senator Hillary Clinton played no part in the Irish peace process. That is not true. Senator Clinton played an important role in the peace process," he said. "I met the senator on many occasions when she was First Lady, and subsequently when she became a senator for New York State. I always found her to be extremely well informed on the issues."
Former SDLP leader John Hume has also come to Mrs. Clinton's defense, expressing surprise that anyone should doubt the importance of her contribution.
