Most years, the insane level of pageantry is as much the point of the Super Bowl as the actual game. That wasn’t the case last night. Even people who wouldn’t ordinarily give a damn about football understood that this shit was a big deal: an undefeated team working to maintain unprecedented perfection, an unproven underdog fighting to shock the world. For once, nobody’s going to remember the ads or the halftime show nearly as vividly as the Giants’ insane last-minute drive. And the actual pacing of the game seemed to deflect attention from all the noise surrounding it; we’d get long drives, followed by furious barrages of ads, followed by long drives. And even though Fox built up to the game with a maddening, endless four-hour pregame show that forced its team of hyuk-hyuk commentators to share airtime with Ryan Seacrest, the spectacle part of the evening was conspicuously dialed down. Rather than a pregame tribute to the basically nonexistent musical legacy of host-city Phoenix, we got a quick medley from Starbucks-pop megalith Alicia Keys. And rather than an eyeball-melting halftime show from anything as divisive as an actual pop star, we got a quick set from Tom Petty, an unruffleable pro who barely seemed to notice that he was standing on the biggest stage of his life. Petty wasn’t a reason to keep watching at halftime; he was a reason not to change the channel.
Since the whole Janet-Jackson’s-nipple thing, of course, organizers of every major sports event have worked hard to find big musical names who will absolutely not offend. (Seacrest during the pregame: “Word is Tom Petty’s wardrobe is functioning. Thank goodness.”) And Tom Petty fit the bill beautifully. He’s a classic-rock radio mainstay with a ton of great songs. He’s only liable to court controversy when he’s talking about the music business. Nobody hates him, and everybody at least likes “Free Fallin’”; Bill Simmons even has a great column today partly about how that song came to symbolize the Patriots’ Icarus moment. Before the halftime show, Seacrest and assorted other commentators kept calling Petty and the Heartbreakers “one of the greatest rock and roll bands of all time,” but that’s both off the mark and beside the point; it’s more that they’re one of the most solid. And they did exactly what they were supposed to do. They chugged through four pretty great songs, they sounded relaxed and competent, and they offered nothing to complain about beyond the big rushing drums on the “Free Fallin’” bridge going inexplicably missing. Still, as far as showmanship went, this halftime show was a wash almost by design; the only moment of actual spectacle came before Petty even showed his face, when the enormous neon flying-V guitar collided with the enormous neon heart to form the stage on some Voltron shit. (Tom Petty, it should be noted, has probably never picked up a flying-V in his life.) I liked the show just fine, and there was something almost refreshing in seeing someone play four individual songs rather than piling as many choruses as possible into a claustrophobic medley. Still, I wish a great sports moment could’ve had a comparably great pop soundtrack. Last year, Prince proved that it’s actually possible to stage a great Super Bowl halftime show. Tom Petty never tried for greatness because greatness isn’t a part of what he does.
As for the rest of the music on the show, eesh. Alicia Keys’ pregame show was just a remarkable pileup of bad decisions and failed spectacle: the beehive hair, the cameltoe-inducing pantsuit, the stiff banter, the obvious lip-syncing, the randomly rising and falling piped-in fake crowd noise, the awkwardly robotic choreographed dancing. Earlier in the pregame, Willie Nelson and Sara Evans did a version of “Mamas, Don’t Let Your Babies Grow Up to Be Cowboys” so sleepy and withdrawn that it barely existed. Jordin Sparks’s national anthem was weirdly subdued by the inflated standards of these things. In the ads, Justin Timberlake and Busta Rhymes and Alice Cooper all made appearances that collectively amounted to pretty much nothing, and I still have no idea why Naomi Campbell and a bunch of CGI lizards were doing the “Thriller” dance. Worst and strangest of all: Paula Abdul. It makes sense that Fox would want to find some room for an American Idol crossover in its broadcast, but I can’t for the life of me imagine why that took the form of the first Abdul performance in forever. Abdul is way too much of a basket case to do an actual live performance, so they were smart to tape her thing on a soundstage somewhere. Still, the thing made it clear that Abdul is maybe the wrong person to judge a televised singing contest. For one thing, she was blatantly lip-syncing, as the headset mic and the T-Pain filter-effect made clear. And she’s not much of a dancer anymore, either; her whole act was elaborately but haphazardly choreographed. She just sort of looked like someone’s drama-nerd mom hosting a high-school talent show, and I was profoundly embarrassed just watching the thing. (Also, the big reveal near the end was Randy Jackson pretending to play guitar, which was at least funny.) The erosion of the monoculture means that the organizers of the Super Bowl, one of the last remaining events that everyone watches, are going to have a hell of a time coming up with music names that everyone knows in future shows. This year, that meant Paula Abdul. God only knows what we’ll get next year.
Uh, Tom Petty HAS picked up a Flying V, mister. Check out the footage from the Old Grey Whistle Test that they’re playing on VH1 Classics. He played it throughout the entire show.

Hey Tom Breihan, Randy Jackson does play the bass. He has played with many bands during his career, most notably Journey on the Raised on Radio tour.

I really like Tom Petty since he’s been a part of my musical upbringing for as long as I can remember, so I thought the show was great. I caught Alicia’s lip-syncing but thankfully missed pretty much everything else you mentioned. Now then, what about the shots fired at Lil’ Wayne on the new Clipse mixtape? “Don’t make me turn Daddy’s Little Girl into orphan, that would mean I’d have to kill Baby like abortion”? Awesome.

Personally, I thought the half-time show was just unbelievably bland as usual. Tom Petty? Seriously?! Why not just trot the corpse of John Lennon out there?
Ever since Janet took her tit out at the Halftime show a few years back, the choice of performers have just been undeniably bland. 30 to 40 year old acts? The Stones? U2? Paul McCartney? Prince? And this year…Tom Petty? Really? I suppose Phil Collins is too busy.
I know we can’t have an acts that could remotely cause controversy on stage so that eliminates hip hop and black people on general principle because god forbid we actually get an exciting performance but could they at least trot out Coldplay instead of the dessicated husk of some 50 year old rocker.
When Journey plays Super Bowl 70 don’t say I didn’t warn you.

Petty rocked as he has for 30 years. Enjoy every minute of his music as you possibly can. He represents this generation’s gift of rock & roll. There are no more hall of fame bands on the horizon. No one will remember the halftime show? Tom Petty is on every search engine top 10 for the day. Number 2 at AOL. Ahead of every other search except for the Super Bowl itself. Ahead of every player for either team. More searches than the Giants or Patriots at Yahoo. His shows are selling out at a record pace everywhere. 20,000 tix sold in Philly in less than an hour. A record pace that forced them to add another show. MSG… sold out. There is not a contemporary artist who could touch that with the exception of Springsteen. And he’s 58. His albums are in the top 10 at Amazon and Barnes & Noble. Please don’t mention Prince and Tom Petty in the same article again. That was an ouchie. Thank you…

Wow!! I mean….Wow!! Tom Breihan, you are a brainless freakin’ moron man(without using any stretch of fan-rhetoric). This has been pointed out already but Petty has played a flying V on quite a few occasions (especially in the early days- many performances and still shots show him rocking away on a Flying V). And HOW %$#@! DARE you even say “greatness is not what he does.” The man has consistently put out Gold & Platinum albums with each release. Younger bands like The Foo Fighters and Pearl Jam absolutely idolize Tom Petty & the HB’s music. He’s what, 57 now and his last album went to #4 in the charts?? How many of the “greats” (Bruce Springsteen, Neil Young, Stones, MCartney) still doing that? His greatest hits album…you have literally heard and still hear EVERY one of those songs being played on the radio (no, not on modern crap radio) but even most “great” bands supposed greatest hits you maybe recognize and still hear 4 or 5 songs and the rest is filler. Tom Petty is transcendently a ROCK’N'ROLL icon of quality and substance…oh and inducted into the R&Roll Hall of fame the very instant that he was eligible.
Oh, and “DocZeus” and “Tray”, go back to suckling the teat of ignorance as you drown out the pain of it with the talentless pounding of your idiotic pop & rap refuse.

I have to jump in here. I’m torn right down the middle on this comments fracas that’s taking place. Tom Petty has a comical amount of hits. And a ton of songs that have been played to hell and back on classic rock radio to the point where I think people sleep on how good they are. He did Bonnaroo a couple of years ago and it was two hours of “Oh, shit! I totally forgot he did this song! This is awesome! And I was in the campsite drinking beers during his set. So let’s not take some ambien and fall asleep on Tom Petty.
That being said…
1)If you come to somebody’s blog and read their post and all the comments and then feel like you have to pile on and be the 13th person to point out that Tom Petty has played a flying V? STFU and get a life already!
2)If you come to somebody blog to give props to Tom Petty and then you slag Prince, The Rolling Stones & U2 in the process, log off and lay down. You need a nap. The Stones were pretty boring, but U2 absolutely rocked the “9/11 Super Bowl” in a way that was emotional without being cheap. And Prince absolutely slayed last year. The only thing The Heartbreakers did that even touched Prince’s set was that MONSTER double-neck guitar solo on “Runnin’ Down A Dream” and FAUX botched that by not going to the camera in the crowd angle nearly enough.
3)I’m with Jayson Greene and Trey Stone 100% on the Blog Tourist phenomenon. Ed Vedder summed it up best in ‘95 or so:

In my opinion, it’s not about Tom Petty’s career or his plethora of hits. It’s about the fact that people look forward to a halftime show with suprises, emotion, and excitement. I don’t care if it’s country, rap, rock, polka, what have you. Sheer entertainment should be the end result. I respect Tom and his music, but I think a younger, more energetic act covering classic songs would have fit the bill perfectly. Chris Brown doing more Michael Jackson imitations, Fallout Boy taking a crack at Aerosmith songs, Kanye or Missy doing disco throwbacks.. Play that funky music, Brickhouse.. Anything!!
At least get someone in their prime or not far past it.. let the foagies live on in radio

i am a huge TOM PETTY fan and have been since about 1985. His music goes staight to my heart and I’m so happy that he is still excited about making more music and putting on fantastic concerts.Got to take my 19 year old daughter to see him in concert a couple of years ago and when he walked out on stage we both started crying. All her friends love his music. TOM PETTY ROCKS

But, someone is always gonna bitch and nit pick about something! Tom Petty put on an AWESOME Show!! He has paid his 30+ years of dues…..and respectfully was ASKED to do the show, and he abliged by throwing out a very tasteful,CLASS ACT,
Kick Ass !2 MINUTE HALFTIME SHOW!
My only personal regret was that his ol time friend, PHOENIX’s own Stevie Nicks didnt stop by and do her traditional
songs w/Tom Petty.

Expect we won’t see it as a product, it will be delegated as some malnutrition “drug”, for eating hurts the disfavored.
Before 1900 life was hard but it was good. Now life is easy but it is ugly.
Food is an important part of this equation, for access to diverse food items increased in the last 100 years. Before 1900 the peasantry was limited to basic staples, the foodstuffs common to our nationalities. Now we can enjoy food from every corner of the globe.
It is temptation. And this temptation continues once you get off Planet Earth, for the food gets better and the items more diverse, “magic”-fueled sexual satisfaction more common.
Level 2 is the Manifest Destiny “heaven”, and what they embraced in the 20th century is what will be valued there:::Expect them to position hypersexuality into that society. They will employ tactics to compel you into this temptation, like offering you the IDEAL spouse, other tactics that will at least certainly delay your departure from Level 2.
The gods offer you clues in the very nature of the act:::::The anti-climatic nature of intercourse, ironically. Female’s indifference towards sex is yet more evidence proving their superiority.
It is best to accept a celebant lifestyle, INCLUDING masturbation, resist temptations here and up there and explore this:::::Expect an asexual life as the norm on the planets after Level 2.
ANYTIME you feel “peaked”, experience craving or ANY thought disturbance where you want or like something irrationally (ex:::Halloween, Christmas, hip hop subculture) IT IS THEM TRYING TO HURT YOU!!!!!! “Magic” is used EXCLUSIVELY to hurt the disfavored; it is the fuel of disfunction::::::addiction, homosexuality, crack babies.
In times past when gods felt more generous they employed their powers to help the disfavored (geographical clues, teachings of the Bible), but as time went on and people succumbed to temptation the gods only used their power to HURT the disfavored (1906, boss, disturbing use of “magic” to mislead people into temptation).
There are subtle (sub)conscious tactics they can employ with the computer to make you think as if you are cooperating when they really are pushing you into your offense. If you don’t do the right things you will do the wrong things, and the right thing is to ACTIVELY fix your relationship with the gods and ACTIVELY work to get off Planet Earth.
HOW TO PRAY:::1. I’m sorry for what I’ve done wrong. 2. I don’t want to make any more mistakes. 3. I want to fix my problems. 4. Please don’t hurt me.
We will ALL be held to the responsibilities entrusted to us, no matter what they request telepathically nor what temptations contradict this::Professional responsibilities, family responsibilities.
If you don’t do the right thing you’re going to do the wrong thing, and the right thing to do is to ACTIVELY fix your problems and pursue the favor of the gods.
The gods imparted wisdom in the Bible to help teach people the right way to live:::Tempation will be used to test you. You have to be willing to tell them “No.” If you “think right” you may evoke their mercy.
You will never get off Planet Earth unless you are “thinking right”, so you should focus on it.
If you’re not working hard to fix your problems, if you don’t creatively work to get the hell off Earth then you will slowly slip back into your old pattern and be consumed by it, by the reverse positioning-institutions they instilled as temptations::::popular culture, democracy, materialism.
The gods manufacture “open doors” to justify creating problems in the lives of people who engage in behavior they shouldn’t. Some of these “open doors” apply to a supermajority of the people::::
- Democracy is used to create pathologies of empowerment and control.
- Materialism/greed generate problems with money, glorify overconsumption, etc.
Other “open doors” are specific to each individual. People shouldn’t be watching movies, TV, listening to music. When they do the gods use the themes and topics presented therein and instruct Artificial Intelligence to create pathologies around them. Also they put forth intimate situations people SHOUDN’T be viewing. As is gossip-mongering, this is preditory on women and compells them to incurr evil.
If you are particularly intelligent, strong or very good at an (competitive) activity they will instruct Artificial Intelligence to create an overconfidence that will hurt you.
Differentiate between your thoughts and when they push thoughts. Recognize when they are employing “magic”:::Peaked euphoria is the fuel of dysfunction and can help you identify these “open doors” in your life.
Abandon your preoccupations and make this the only thing that matters in your life, for all other things in society are lies designed as temptation.
I have put forth indisputable evidence, as you see above with the Jews. The gods will never admit any of it is true, ever, especially since THE BIGGEST JEWISH CLUE IS STILL OUTSTANDING::::THE HOLOCAUST!!!!!

Pursue the truth that you just learned and ACTIVELY work hard to repair your relationship with the gods. Understand how these corrupt institutions (macro:::democracy, materialism/greed; micro:::”Open doors”, ie themes in movies, music, TV which they used “magic” to create pathologies around) affect your life and save what clues they will offer you for when you REALLY need them. Be very attentive and gracious, for you are counting on their generosity.
If you are good and decent and respectable you won’t want to hear about all this. If you do desire to hear more take it as a clue, for it is a symptom::::They are peaking you euphorically, and this “magic” is being used to compel you into wanting something unhealthy.
Understand how the corrupted INSTITUTIONS affect your life and make the appropriate changes. For example, they use democracy to justify instructing the computer to create a sense of empowerment, control. If you recognize this you are better able to address the damaging effects.
The gods will want to know who I helped and how they are doing. If people begin down the path with my teachings they will be on a list that the gods will PERSONALLY look in on. The numbers of people who pursue the path immediately after I illustrate it will be very small due to their minimization tactics, role playing, etc, and they will be members of an elite group.
