Senators fete the New Jersey Giants

That name can’t be found in the NFL standings, and the Giants helmets are emblazoned with a bold “NY” logo. But it was nevertheless proclaimed Thursday by New Jersey senators honoring this year’s Super Bowl champions.
“Whether you’re a football fan or not, I’m sure you found yourself caught up in the hype this past winter with the success of the New Jersey Giants,” said Sen. Paul Sarlo, D-Bergen. “I emphasize the New Jersey Giants.”
Sarlo’s district includes Giants Stadium, where the Giants have played since 1976 while retaining their New York moniker.
And though the Giants tell the world they’re from New York, Garden State senators said their come-from-behind attitude represented more of a Jersey mentality.
Sarlo said they resembled “gutsy New Jerseyans” and “what we are all about here in New Jersey.”
The Giants beat the heavily favored New England Patriots 17-14 in the Super Bowl, ending New England’s hopes for an undefeated season.
The Senate presented a ceremonial resolution to coach Tom Coughlin, who in turn gave Sarlo and Senate President Richard J. Codey new Giants helmets.
“You must be at your best when your best is needed, and certainly our football team was,” Coughlin said.
The Giants and New York Jets, who have played in Giants Stadium since 1984, are building a new stadium near Giants Stadium that’s scheduled to open in 2010.
The new stadium includes a new practice facility for the Giants, while the Jets are building a new headquarters in Florham Park.
“You’ll be totally New Jersey, just like the Jets,” Codey, D-Essex, told Coughlin.
The ceremony enlivened the usually reserved Senate, especially when Codey grabbed a football and unleashed a perfect pass across the Senate chamber to Sen. Nicholas Scutari, D-Union.

South Jersey Restaurant Week

From Tuesday, March 4th, through Friday, March 7th, the Susan G. Komen for the Cure Central and South Jersey will host the first annual Dine Out for the Cure Restaurant Week in Monmouth and Ocean Counties. This is a wonderful opportunity to enjoy a great meal while joining in the fight against breast cancer. Seventeen area restaurants have pledged their support by donating 10% of their proceeds on the designated day to Komen Central and South Jersey.
Participating restaurants include:
Farrell’s Stout & Steak, Point Pleasant
The Harrison, Asbury Park
Island Palm Grill, Spring Lake
McLoone’s Rum Runner, Sea Bright
Restaurant Plan B, Asbury Park
Bella Sogno, Bradley Beach
Captain Jack’s, Ocean Grove
Dino Distinctive Dining, Long Branch
More than a fundraiser, Dine Out for the Cure is also a breast cancer awareness campaign. “Many people only think about breast cancer during October. One in eight women will be diagnosed with breast cancer in their lifetime, and early detection is a message we need to promote year-round,” stated Nancy K. Healey, Executive Director of Komen Central and South Jersey. “We are so grateful to these restaurants for helping us to disseminate this important message and for generously supporting the Komen Promise.”
For more information about the event, please call Komen Central and South jersey at (609) 896-1201` or via e-mail at info@komencsnj.org. To ensure a table at any of the participating restaurants, Komen suggests contacting the restaurant directly for reservations.
I can’t wait to visit the restaurants that week. This is a win-win. I get to enjoy a great meal and help support the Susan G. Komen for the Cure. I plan on taking my mother, sisters and friends to dinner on a couple of different nights. Thanks to the restaurants for their generosity!

New Jersey Mega Millions

The Mega Millions lottery jackpot has zoomed up to $122 million for Friday’s drawing - and plenty of folks are feeling mega-lucky.
“I got the winning ticket right here,” said Pedro Rodriguez, 38, of Ridgewood, Queens, holding the single $1 entry he bought Wednesday on E. 14th St. “It’s a lot of money for anybody.”
Vaughn Lucas said he wasn’t quite sure what he’d do if he wakes up Saturday morning and finds out one of his four tickets is a big winner.
“I’d have to wake up all over again to make sure it was real,” said Lucas, 23, of Brownsville, Brooklyn.
Tickets for the multistate lottery are available in New York and New Jersey.
The last time the big prize went into the stratosphere was the week before Christmas, when it ballooned to $163 million.
Rodriguez said he’s not sure exactly how he would spend the money if he actually landed the big prize.
“I’d help my family. You do the basics first,” Rodriguez said. “Then I’d think about myself.”
