The Nashville Film Festival isn’t huge, like Sundance or Toronto. Nor is it tiny, like the many regional festivals that have sprouted in the past 10 years like mushrooms after rain. What the Nashville Film Festival is, mostly, is ours. It reflects our identity as Music City, with an ever-expanding section of films devoted to bluegrass, country and beyond. It has a makeup as diverse as our own population, with selections targeted to Nashville’s thriving Mexican and Kurdish communities. Its audiences—celebrities, college kids, churchgoers, out-of-towners—could be the line outside Pancake Pantry any given Saturday.
There’s just a lot more of it. Last year, for the first time in its 39-year history, the Nashville Film Festival broke the 20,000 attendance mark. When it opens this Thursday, April 17, for a week’s run at Regal’s Green Hills megaplex, another boost in attendance is likely. Whether you’ve been every year since the festival was called Sinking Creek, back at Vanderbilt throughout the 1970s, or you’re going for the first time, you could probably use some help sorting through the crowds, the tickets, and above all, dozens of different programming blocks devoted to features, documentaries, panels and workshops.
If so, you’re in the right place. Below, the Scene’s writers offer previews of this year’s NaFF attractions day by day, pointing out films you shouldn’t miss (as well as some you can safely skip). Along with those, we offer some practical tips for getting the most out of the festival. First, buy advance tickets, either at the downstairs Green Hills festival office or online at nashvillefilmfestival.org. Weekday matinees rarely fill to capacity, but weekend shows (especially at night) or any film featuring visiting celebrities will sell out long before showtime. The same is often true of movies showing only once at the festival: Usually, that means the film is something special, or at least has theatrical distribution. Plan accordingly.

The Easter Bunny is Comin' to Town: Deluxe Edition DVD Review

When one thinks of animated primetime television specials of the 1960s and 1970s, few brand names are likely to come to mind as quickly and fondly as Rankin/Bass. From 1964 to 1985, only the rare year went by without TV viewers being treated to a new creation from Arthur Rankin, Jr. and Jules Bass.
For those who know it, “Rankin-Bass” summons a cheerful vision of stop-motion, for this is the medium in which the director-producers most frequently dabbled.
The bulk of the company’s extensive filmography deals with Christmas; their best-remembered works are as closely associated with the holiday as anything. Programs like Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer (1964), Frosty the Snowman (1969), and The Year Without a Santa Claus (1974) have long been staples of seasonal viewing and doubtlessly garner more attention in some families than Jesus, Mary, and Joseph.
From time to time, Rankin and Bass adapted tales from the likes of Charles Dickens, Jules Verne, J.R.R. Tolkien, and Kenneth Grahame. On three occasions, the partners turned their attentions to another holiday: Easter. Debuting in 1977, The Easter Bunny is Comin’ to Town was the last of these. The Easter Bunny is a sequel to Rankin/Bass’s Santa Claus is Comin’ to Town and it is modeled closely after that well-regarded 1970 special. The strongest link between the two is Fred Astaire, who reprises his role as mailman S.D. Kluger, serving again as storyteller and singer for this outing.

Lakeshore Records Releases The Soundtrack For Jumper, Composed By …

Los Angeles, CA. (Top40 Charts/ CineMedia Promotions) - Lakeshore Records will release the original motion picture soundtrack for JUMPER on iTunes February 12th and in stores on February 19th. The album features original music by John Powell (UNITED 93, SHREK).
Composer John Powell has written music for animated films (HAPPY FEET, SHREK, ICE AGE: THE MELTDOWN) and comedies (PLUTO NASH, ALFIE, MR.
3000) but is probably best known for his work in the action film genre on such films as MR. AND MRS. SMITH, X-MEN: THE LAST STAND, FACE/OFF, THE ITALIAN JOB, and the BOURNE series of films (THE BOURNE IDENTITY, THE BOURNE SUPREMACY, THE BOURNE ULTIMATUM).Powell’s work on these action scores seamlessly blends orchestral and electronic elements.
The British born Powell began originally trained as a violinist. In 1995 he founded a London based commercial music house before moving to the United States 2 years later. He is one of the best known former members of the Remote Control (formerly Media Ventures) team of composers, where he first teamed with Harry Gregson-Williams, his collaborator on several scores (ANTZ, CHICKEN RUN, SHREK).
From the director of MR. & MRS. SMITH and THE BOURNE IDENTITY, Doug Liman, comes JUMPER. A genetic anomaly allows a young man to teleport himself anywhere. He discovers this gift has existed for centuries, and finds himself in a war that has been raging for thousands of years between “jumpers” and those who have sworn to kill them. The film stars Hayden Christensen, Samuel L. Jackson, and Diane Lane, based on the novels by Steven Gould.

50 First Dates Soundtrack

When it comes to Amy Winehouse, never believe what you read. Despite reports that she would be appearing at the Grammys on Sunday, the singer’s publicist told MTV News a decision hasn’t been made either way. And no, Amy hasn’t left rehab yet, although she did depart the Capio Nightingale clinic, where she’s been staying the last few weeks, to make a pre-scheduled meeting at the United States Embassy. According to her rep, the meeting was arranged so that the singer could discuss renewing her visa. …
It sounds like Snoop Dogg may be welcome in England again. The rapper, who has been banned from the U.K. since a melee at London’s Heathrow Airport in 2006, told Larry King on Friday that he’s been given the green light to travel to the country again. After writing to the British government recently in a bid to get his ban overturned, the rapper told King, "I was wrongfully accused, and now I’ve been accepted back in. The judge overturned it. He looked at the evidence and looked at what I’ve been doing, just checked my character out and found me to be innocent, and now I’m able to go back out there. So, everybody in the U.K., big Snoop Dogg will be back to come give you all what you want." British authorities have not yet confirmed the rapper’s claims. …

The next court date is reportedly set for March 21. …
The Spice Girls’ triumphant world reunion tour has hit a roadblock. The group announced on Friday that dates in Australia, China, South Africa and Argentina have been scrapped due to "family and personal commitments." The last stop of the tour is now going to be in Toronto on February 26. "Sadly the tour needs to come to an end by the end of February due to family and personal commitments for Emma, Geri, Mel B, Melanie C and Victoria," the group announced on its Web site, explaining that the rest of the dates were canceled "due to the phenomenal demand for tickets in the U.K. and the U.S., along with the touring logistics for such a massive production [that] it was not possible to fit everything in." And though there is rumored tension once again in Spice World, the note ends with the good news that "as the girls return to normal family life and the kids go back to school, they are reviewing all the options, who knows what the future might bring!" …
Muse will release a live DVD/CD on March 17 in the U.K., although it’s yet unclear if the set will see a U.S. release. H.A.A.R.P. - Muse Live at Wembley Stadium shows the band onstage performing tracks like "Knights of Cydonia," "Hysteria," "Butterflies and Hurricanes" and "Starlight" during a two-night stretch at the venue last summer. … P.O.D. founding guitarist Marcos Curiel — who split from the band in 2003 — is back in the fold, and the group has signed a new deal with INO/Columbia that includes its new LP, When Angels and Serpents Dance. "Things are exciting again," singer Sonny Sandoval said in a statement. "When the four of us are in a room making music it’s definitely right, and Marcos brings that passion for music into the band." Helmet’s Paige Hamilton, Suicidal Tendencies’ Mike Muir, the Marley Sisters — and a gospel choir! — crop up on the April 8 release, the first single of which is "Addicted." …
The Arcade Fire are considering suing Fox after one of their songs was used in a Super Bowl ad, allegedly without the group’s permission, according to Pitchfork. The ad, which promoted Fox’s NFL coverage and also appeared on the network during the regular football season, features the group’s song "No Cars Go." Proceeds will go to Southern California children’s charity Variety. … Incubus’ Make Yourself Foundation has ponied up $10,000 for Denver environmental-advocacy organization Rock the Earth — the largest single donation the group has ever received. It’s believed to be the largest settlement of several reached so far with the dozens of people and companies who’ve sued over the blaze, which began when pyrotechnics used by the night’s main attraction, Great White, ignited highly flammable soundproofing foam around the stage. Last month, Station co-owner Michael Derderian was granted early release from prison by a state parole board. He is set to be freed from prison in October 2009. …
There’s lots of news on the Vines front. Singer Craig Nicholls has been diagnosed and treated for Asperger syndrome — a developmental disorder that specialists say might be responsible for some of his bizarre episodes in the past — and now the group is hammering away at a new album produced by Rob Schnapf (Foo Fighters, Beck). The Aussies have lined up three dates to hype the release, which is due in the spring: They will play March 14 at the South by Southwest festival in Austin, Texas; March 17 at New York’s Bowery Ballroom; and two days later at the Troubadour in West Hollywood, California. But while the band is focused on the future, Capitol/EMI will take a look back on March 11 with The Best of the Vines, which culls tracks from the group’s first three studio efforts. …

The yet-untitled record will include the band’s takes on PJ Harvey’s "Rid of Me," the Jesus Lizard’s "The Art of Self-Defense" and INXS’ "Devil Inside." … The recently reunited Mighty Mighty Bosstones have been added to the lineup for this year’s Bamboozle festival. Kelly reportedly missed the gig so that he could appear in a Chicago court for a hearing. A suit filed in Atlanta District Court this week by Royalty Records reportedly claims Kelly agreed to perform December 6 with Ne-Yo and Keyshia Cole, but then rescheduled the show for December 20, the day he was set to appear in court. The promoters are seeking the return of the payment, TMZ.com says. …

Well, the "Miserable" band is back in writing mode, according to its Web site. "Lit is currently writing together, and I hope that there will be more news to give you this year," a post on the site claims. The band’s last album, which was self-titled, hit stores back in 2004.

Butterfly Effect Soundtrack

So there they are, Philip Seymour Hoffman and Albert Finney, emoting like nobody’s business after they’ve buried the woman who was, respectively, their mother and their wife, in Before the Devil Knows You’re Dead. There’s a silence, and then Hoffman speaks - whereupon Finney slaps him. It’s clearly a crucial moment, this explosion of violence, but I’ve yet to talk to anyone who could hear what Hoffman actually said.
The same goes for whole chunks of the dialogue in Charlie Wilson’s War (Seymour Hoffman’s an offender here, too) and even for patches of the otherwise beautifully spoken There Will Be Blood. And it’s not just because these are American films, the accents and dialects impenetrable to the British ear: the Coen brothers’ No Country for Old Men is set in rural Texas and every syllable is crystal clear. The film critic Anne Billson offers an explanation: “The Coen brothers are famously proud of their dialogue so they make sure you can hear it.”
Nor is it to do with rapid-fire dialogue, as in Charlie Wilson’s War. There’s no film dialogue more speedy than that between Rosalind Russell and Cary Grant in His Girl Friday (the director, Howard Hawks, is said to have kept a metronome going on set to ensure that the cut-and-thrust never flagged) - but their speech is bell-like in its clarity.
So what’s going on? Is this the latest thing in sound recording? And why is it so much worse in American films? In his novel, Engleby, Sebastian Faulks has his sociopathic protagonist complain that: “American cop thrillers are bad because you can’t hear what they say, and the story often turns on a side-of-the-mouth remark, indecipherable, that the stand-in was a fake or that the plant was working for the others.”
Does Faulks feel the same way himself? Well, he shares my gripe about that Finney/Hoffman scene; none of the people he saw Before the Devil Knows You’re Dead with had a clue what Hoffman said either. “As for war films,” he says, “you can never hear a thing.” But on the whole he is more tolerant: “It’s to do with getting that gritty feeling of the New York police or the drug dealer - you don’t want them to sound like Henry Higgins: ‘I say, darling, try looking under the chassis. I think you’ll find the drugs are hidden there. Did you get that?’” It’s a matter, Faulks argues, of “realism - and inaudibility is a small price to pay. I mean, in Scorsese films it’s very hard to catch what’s being said, but you sure get the message.”
Not always: as the critics noted at the time, Michael Mann’s Miami Vice was almost totally opaque. First, the mix was muddier than Glastonbury; second, Colin Farrell was allowed to wallow in unintelligibility; and third, what dialogue was audible was couched in the incomprehensible argot of the Hispanic drug lords. That hunger for “authenticity” is always a problem: Andy Harries, producer of The Queen, says he doesn’t even try to understand what’s being said on DVDs of The Wire or The Shield. He goes straight to the subtitles. That way, he can acclimatise himself to the slang. But some DVDs are just hard on the ear: the writer Tim de Lisle is just one of the people I spoke to who had to take the subtitle route with the Bourne Trilogy.
That’s DVDs. Films proper, in state-of-the-art cinemas, should not be a trial. Robert Fox, who produced The Hours and Notes on a Scandal, thinks it’s “an old-fashioned thing: diction. And it’s veering on arrogance. Maybe it’s not the actor’s fault; it’s the director’s responsibility to do something about it. The thing is, Brando mumbled, Pacino mumbled, De Niro mumbled - now lots of people have joined the club. Philip Seymour Hoffman? I think it’s a slight affectation, maybe. But the trouble is, I think no director says, ‘We can’t hear you.’” (One music supervisor told me that sometimes the problem is that the director is too close to the material - he knows the script so well, he thinks it’s audible.)
In the end, though, it’s the actors who deliver the lines. Producer Hercules Bellville (Sexy Beast) also points to Brando: “Mumbling began with Brando,” he says, “but you could discern what was being said.” (It was Frank Sinatra who first dubbed Brando “Mumbles”, after Brando got the part of Sky Masterson that Sinatra cherished in Guys and Dolls.)
Bellville also fingers Robert Altman’s penchant for overlapping dialogue as a culprit for the present state of affairs - that, and naturalism. “I’ve got no problems with 1940s films; then only Peter Lorre had a strange accent. Now there are all sorts of odd accents and dialects, and the colloquial is often rapid and slurred. But technically, there’s no reason for it. The whole process of mixing sound effects, dialogue and music takes weeks, tweaking this, fixing that. It can’t be carelessness - but I do share your frustration.”
Film editor Guy Bensley, who worked on Fade to Black and The Importance of Being Earnest, has sat through many sound mixes. “It’s an intense business,” he says. “You’ve got the composer here, the guy with the sound effects machine there, all competing. And some directors like to create a sense of energy from having a great wallop of swirling sound - but at the cost of knowing exactly what’s going on.” His prime example? “I remember watching [David Fincher’s] Seven and not hearing a thing for the first hour. It all took place in pouring rain, and that was all you could hear.”
Bensley has himself edited a film - the as-yet unreleased Butterfly On a Wheel - in which a lovers’ reunion is pointed up with a downpour; the words themselves didn’t really matter, it was the emotion that counted. (This is presumably what Paul Thomas Anderson is up to with Jonny Greenwood’s intrusive score in There Will Be Blood.) But surely no actor or director would deliberately wish to have their words misunderstood? Bensley agrees: “Though it would be lovely to say that someone has stood up in the dubbing theatre and fought for the integrity of their unintelligibility, the answer’s no, no, no.”
There’s no real excuse for being unintelligible. If the dialogue really can’t be heard, the film can be revoiced - though it is expensive. And today’s technology means that you can take out every micro-second of soundtrack and re-build it. So perhaps the blame lies, as one director tells me, with “teenage American directors asleep in the dubbing room and strung out on drugs”. (Mind you, Before the Devil Knows You’re Dead was directed by Sidney Lumet, who is in his 80s, while Mike Nichols, who is in his 70s, made Charlie Wilson’s War.)
The surest way of avoiding all this, of course, is to take the French and Italian approach. They record the final version after filming, in the dubbing theatre. There’s no silence on set as the camera rolls, and the performers see shooting as time, in effect, for a spirited read through. So you can always hear Catherine Deneuve. Or can you? My French is not that good.
Of course, there are some people you can do nothing about. As Bensley texted me after our conversation: “Does anyone understand Sylvester Stallone as Rocky? Or Rambo? Or ever?” And that really is humanity’s loss.
