12 June 2008 – By William Holloman, staff writer
Two white females are being sought by Mount Olive Police for the alleged theft of a $600 television from Roses.
Officers said store officials reported the two females walked by a register area pushing a shopping cart, went to the parking lot and placed the television inside a gold Dodge vehicle with North Carolina license # XPL 5972.
Investigation is continuing.
Officers also lodged a shoplifting charge against Lara Edvardo Lopez, address unknown, for the alleged theft of two DVDs from Wal-Mart.
The woman is accused of concealing the DVDs in her clothing while in a restroom.
She was placed under a $500 bond and faces the charge in Wayne District Court on July 27.
Police filed no charges at this time against a suspect who tried to pass a counterfeit $20 at the Piggly Wiggly.
The bill was confiscated and investigation continues.
In other police activity, a charge of Driving while impaired was filed against 37-year-old Renea Mathis Parks of 195 Juniper Road.
The charge came at a routine road check in which officers said the driver almost ran over them before stopping the vehicle.
Gas thefts continue.
Officials reported a drive off and the loss of $70.25 worth of gas from the Friendly Mart #6 on North Breazeale Avenue, and the theft of another $10 worth in a drive off at the Wilco Hess Mart on Highway 55-West.
Patricia Lalonde of 205 East Church Street reported the theft of a $100 all terrain bicycle from her home.
And, a charge alleging simple affray was lodged against Bruce Fryer, Jr. of 1079 South Center Street.
He is accused of assaulting Lamont Teachey of 410 East Church Street.

Muscle man is Titan among ‘Gladiators’

H ave you ever wanted to be a superhero? Mike O’Hearn may not be able to shoot laser beams from his ears or bench-press an aircraft carrier, but he does wear spandex shorts.
Back in the late ’80s and early ’90s, O’Hearn was an alternate for the original “American Gladiators,” which pitted amateur competitors against a team of colorful “gladiators” in a variety of athletic competitions.
Then known as Thor, O’Hearn never got to compete on television. But in January, NBC launched an updated revival of “American Gladiators,” bringing back O’Hearn - an actor, bodybuilder, power lifter and fitness model - now known as Titan.
A ratings hit, the show was quickly picked up for a second season, which premieres tomorrow at 8 p.m. on WHDH (Ch. 7).
“You go out and play games. It’s not a bad living,” O’Hearn said.
Along with such classic events as the Joust, the Wall, Hang Tough, Powerball, Assault, Pyramid, Gauntlet and the Eliminator, the new show also features Earthquake and Hit & Run.
“It’s great to see the line of fans outside ready for the show,” O’Hearn said. “It gets your heart going.”
As for the new contestants, O’Hearn said, “What I’ve noticed is the heart and fight of these guys this season. They already know the majority of the games, because they’ve seen the first season, and they know the majority of the gladiators, so they’re a little more prepared as well.”
It’s possible that out there in America, there’s a little kid who’s idolizing Titan, just the way that O’Hearn idolized Arnold Schwarzenegger when he was knee-high to a barbell. If O’Hearn is lucky, he might just be able to step into Schwarzenegger’s big, furry boots in a new version of “Conan the Barbarian.”
“Before this, I did the bodybuilding, the fitness covers, the romance-novel covers, and that was great. I’ve done some shows and TV, it’s all great, but this is such a different league.

TV Guide, Having Just Been Bought, Is Bracing to Be Sold

Debra Birnbaum and Craig Tomashoff became the top editors of TV Guide on Tuesday. The magazine’s parent was sold last week.
Days after getting new owners and new editors, the long-troubled TV Guide is back on the block.
Another sale would be the fourth change in control during the last decade for TV Guide, which has long been trying to forge a new identity as an entertainment magazine, while moving away from what was once its primary mission, television listings. New technology and changing viewing habits have made keeping up with listings more difficult and irrelevant.
Last week, the Macrovision Solutions Corporation completed a $2.8 billion takeover of Gemstar-TV Guide, the magazine’s publisher. The new owner has made clear that it is interested in some of Gemstar’s electronic assets, not the one made of paper and ink that has suffered through years of plummeting sales.
But the people running the magazine note that its circulation has stabilized above 3.2 million, still one of the largest in the industry, and they say that as a business, TV Guide has turned a corner.
In the first quarter, “we were profitable for the first time after 15 consecutive quarters of losses, and we’re extremely excited about that,” said J. Scott Crystal, president of the magazine. TV Guide’s ad pages have grown over the last year, while advertising in the magazine industry as a whole has declined slightly.
“There’s more of a need for this magazine than ever, given the explosion in the number of TV channels,” said Debra Birnbaum, a TV Guide editor who was promoted to editor in chief on Tuesday. Craig Tomashoff was named executive editor, the second-ranking position.
Macrovision wants to find buyers for TV Guide and two former Gemstar-TV Guide cable channels, the TV Guide channel and TVG, a horse-racing channel. But it wants to keep TVGuide.com, an operation largely separate from the magazine that offers celebrity videos and a video search engine.

Hawaii Tv

A Japanese navy destroyer equipped with advanced radar has collided with a fishing boat off the Pacific coast, splitting the boat in two and plunging two fishermen into the chilly waters.
The men remained missing.
The Coastguard and navy deployed 10 ships, including the destroyer, and six helicopters to search off the coast of Chiba, near Tokyo, for the two men, said Keiji Oba, a regional Coastguard official.
The collision, the cause of which was not immediately known, drew high profile attention in Japan, where many people harbour pacifist sentiments and remain sensitive to anything related to the military.
“An accident like this should never happen,” Prime Minister Yasuo Fukuda told parliament. “We have to take measures to prevent a recurrence.”
The destroyer, Atago, is equipped with the Aegis advanced missile defence system. The ship, delivered to the navy last year, was bound for Yokosuka, south of Tokyo, following equipment tests in Hawaii, according to the navy.
When it docked at Yokosuka, Coastguard officials with a court warrant seized the ship and searched it on suspicion of professional negligence, said Hiroyuki Ninomiya, a Coast Guard spokesman.
TV footage showed the two halves of the 15 metre fishing boat floating in the ocean. Rescue divers searched the remains of the vessel but did not find the fishermen.
The 7,700-tonne destroyer did not suffer any serious damage, though TV footage showed scratches on its hull which defence officials said could not be immediately linked to the collision.
The two missing fishermen were identified as Haruo Kichisei, 58, and his son Tetsuhiro Kichisei, 23.
The defence minister complained about the navy’s crisis management, saying it was slow to report the accident. The navy reported the collision to the Coastguard at 4.23am local time on Wednesday, but news of the accident did not reach Ishiba for another 75 minutes.
In 1988, a sport fishing boat was rammed by a Japanese navy submarine, killing 30 people.
In 2001, a US Navy submarine crashed into and sank a Japanese fishing boat off Hawaii, killing nine of the 35 high school students, teachers and crew on board the vessel. The accident triggered outrage in Japan.
